A messy scholar's home(u and s)

The walls of this strange little house are made of stone, mortared together with mud. Near the west wall, a steep wooden staircase ascends to the roof, bordered by an unstable handrail. Books, parchment, and scrolls are scattered about the place, filling up the table and occupying all the surfaces. Even the bed in the corner is covered with books, making the lumpy surface uncomfortable to sleep upon.
The south door is closed.
The only obvious exits are up and south.
